When God Tells You To Give

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

"Presently, when a woman of Samaria came along to draw water, Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink– Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God's gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him [instead] and He would have given you living water. Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again. But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.” ‭‭John‬ ‭4:7, 10, 13-14‬ ‭AMPC‬.

When God tells you to give, His real motive, His intention is to give you, to show you His generosity, to satisfy His desire to lavish you with His goodness. He’s always looking for an opportunity to bless you, to show Himself strong on your behalf. Take a look at this: “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him...” ‭‭II Chronicles‬ ‭16:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, This is a remote and barren place, and the day is now over; send the throngs away into the villages to buy food for themselves. Jesus said, They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14:15-16‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

Let's take a look at it as reported by John, “Jesus looked up then, and seeing that a vast multitude was coming toward Him, He said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread, so that all these people may eat? But He said this to prove (test) him, for He well knew what He was about to do.”

‭‭John‬ ‭6:5-6‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

Jesus told the disciples to give...but He already knew what He was about to do. When God tells you to give, there’s a miracle stirring and stewing, get ready for overflow on abundance.

Let's journey into the Old Testament to a familiar story.

“And the word of the Lord came to him: Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you. So he arose and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her, Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. And she said, As the Lord your God lives, I have not

a loaf baked but only a handful of meal in the jar and a little oil in the bottle. See, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it–and die. Elijah said to her, Fear not; go and do as you have said. But make me a little cake of [it] first and bring it to me, and afterward prepare some for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: The jar of meal shall not waste away or the bottle of oil fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth. She did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not spent nor did the bottle of oil fail, according to the word which the Lord spoke through Elijah.”

‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭17:8-16‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

The widow’s giving opened the door for the miraculous, not only for provision but the restoration of her son back to life. If she had not given, would she have had the privilege of hosting Elijah?

Notice that the woman at the well did not end up giving Jesus any water, but she got the living water from Jesus. It’s like the story of Abraham, he did not end up killing Isaac as a sacrifice physically (the Bible said he did figuratively) but he received God’s provision of a ram immediately and much more.

“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”...

So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep

for the burnt offering?” “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together. When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!” “Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭22:2, 6-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Every prompting, word, instruction, command or direction of God to give is His invitation to us to experience the supernatural. He watches over His Word to perform it. He did not say you should watch over His Word to make sure it comes to pass.

“Then said the Lord to me, You have seen well, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it.” ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭1:12‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

“For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:37‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

“Not one promise from God is empty of power, for nothing is impossible with God!” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:37‬ ‭TPT‬‬

“And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭4:26-29‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Go get some rest, it’s not your staying awake that will bring God’s Word to pass. He who keeps Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers.
